Whether from reading an article or watching a video that's emotional I had an image in my head of a grief stricken face. The bird came after I'd started drawing - often I have no idea what the finished image will be before I begin to draw. Sometimes in drawing ideas comes to mind and I either discard them or go with them. I liked how the feathers curled around her face.

I knew the sky needed to be disturbed, stormy, like the skies I used to paint in my landscapes at art college. I echoed the style of the sky in blue nearer ground, a sort of symbol of hope perhaps.

I added further hair added to the right hand side, darkening the face thinking it might give a more dramatic finish. I'm not entirely happy with how it turned out as there was some shadow colored there before I drew the hair. But, some pieces finish well (like Sea Pearl) and others are a learning exercise.
