Black and White 3

Re-doing a previous drawing 'Mother of Bees'. Link to a previous blogpost Artwork process: Mother of Bees.

Using pencil eraser and new fineliners. Colouring in the shirt pattern was meditative.

Background comes from the zigzag movement made by bees in flight...

Black & White

After testing out a number of white pencil and markers I decided to do a black and white drawing. Pens used included uniPin black fineliners, uniBall Signo white gel, Liquitex white paint marker, uniPosca white paint marker, black Sharpie and Pentel black brush pen. I used A3 Bristol Board.

This was very much a doodle rather than a planned drawing as I wanted to try out working with black and white mediums together. Penciled and inked it and began to fill out the black areas first. The background needed to have its own texture so I blocked it out with black Sharpie and overlaid with dots of white from the Faber-Castell PITT marker which I'd found gave a soft effect.

FInished the piece by roughly painting over the skin areas with Liquitex white which looked more ivory than white against the paper. I liked the rough technique alongside the defined black lines and feel that I'm getting closer to the kind of artworks I want to make. Something a bit more 'painterly'.

I redid the mouth as I wasn't happy even though this was a doodle and I'm not usually pernickety when it comes to doodles - they're the practise/ideas-down kind of drawings. Using the brush pen I drew lips over layers of Liquitex white which had covered the original mouth. I couldn't use a fineliner as it would have broken the surface of the paint whereas the brush pen was softer. I liked the result, and I'll use this mix of mediums again.

ABADID 5...ARTWORK Watercolour markers

I have a mixed collection of Letraset AquaMarkers and Winsor & Newton WaterColour Markers. Colours range through yellows, orange, red, blues and green.

Continuing with the green mermaid theme I sketched her gazing at an orb as a small shoal of squid-like fish swim towards her. Inked in the drawing and choose to use the watercolour markers. I'm never sure I'm using them correctly - they tend to rub and distress the surface of the paper. While I was colouring I wondered if there was a different way to use them. Perhaps not by shading in using a 'bottom left to top right and reverse' motion and instead gently trailing the tip on the paper like a brush. I haven't given up on them even though they do result in a cheap marker look until the watercolours dry.

I outlined the figure and fish with a heavier fineliner and then outlined that with white gel pen. I'm trying out some Gelly Roll by Sakura but although there's a lot of hype around these gel pens I think I do prefer the Uniball Signo. The Gelly Roll ink takes a moment to dry before looking white whereas the Signo ink dries almost instantly. Also used a fineliner to draw swirls in the background of water and highlighted this with white gel pen which helped the marker look of the coloured background. Happy enough.

#inktober challenge...

There's been a challenge going round called #inktober which is as it sounds - drawing with black ink during October. I began with a simple scribble and built up the picture using Pentel brushpen (which I've only just found out takes an replaceable ink cartridge - duh!), black ink from an ancient bottle of Pelikan, a black Sharpie and a selection of uniPin fineliners 0.1 - 0.8. I also used a little uni-ball Signo broad white gel pen (found some on Amazon).

Liked the rough texture which the brushpen created - sometimes a pen running out of ink can give interesting marks. I dropped the Pelikan ink onto the paper and blew at it using a straw. The tiny feathered lines were extended using fineliners. I had worked on the white circle on the left and didn't like it, so the Sharpie filled that in and the white gel pen was added on top to reclaim the white circle - I stopped myself from applying further layers of white to make it dense white - I really liked the woodcut effect. Tiny lines with a 0.1 fineliner extended the brushpen marks.

At one point I got quite irritated with what I was doing and scrawled over the top, throwing it to oneside before going to bed. In the bright light of morning I saw that I could finish it and adapted the scrawl into the overall image. I also realised I had been scanning each stage of the picture as Black & White. This gives a stark very well defined look. So when I had finished the piece I also scanned it in grey tones...looks very different - I especially like the greyness of the Pelikan ink.
